Coming up in Episode 212.....it's the final piece of coverage from the Big Blue Box 2 convention, James hosts the on-stage writers panel featuring Simon Guerrier, Andrew Smith and Nigel Fairs.

Feedback always welcome (keep it brief!) at feedback@thedoctorwhopodcast.com - audio feedback under two minutes is prefered and stands a far better chance of making it onto a future DWP.

The Lodger

Seems to be a low budget filler to me.
Of course having the excruciating James Corden in it did not help matters. >:(

I'm surprised how many people dislike the Lodger. For me it was a good, fun, light episode with some fabulous screen time from Matt Smith. It's not a big arc serving classic, but I thought it was very enjoyable.

I liked "The Lodger" also. Of course, as an American, I've no familiarity with James Corden and whatever he's done to earn such negative feelings. I even had to Google the clip of the award show dust-up with Sir Patrick Stewart to see what all the fuss was about -- and it's quite clear the problem was Sir Patrick's. (Which came as a profound disappointment to this Star Trek fan.)

Back to topic, I enjoy having a lighter story prior to an epic finale, and in this instance, "The Lodger" served as a delightful appetizer to the large meal that was "The Pandorica Opens"/"The Big Bang". It even worked as (perhaps) a bit of foreshadowing, with the happy ending for Craig and Sophie setting the stage for Amy & Rory's matrimony. And, really, who wouldn't want Matt Smith to whip 'em up an omelet?  :P

I'm not particularly surprised that "Victory of the Daleks" took the top spot in this poll, but I admit I am a bit taken aback that someone voted for "The Big Bang".

It was you, Trev, wasn't it?  :D

it would be interesting to know why...do you think disappointment that it wasn't as good as everyone made out plays a part in it?

That's as good a guess as any, although I don't know how it could have been any better. Then again, I voted it one of the best. Presumably anyone who thought it was one of the three "least best" of the season had some serious issue with it.

Also, I don't suppose it really was Trev who voted, since the mods report fan feedback on the podcast and probably don't wish to influence it directly.

Not surprisingly, I didn't like Victory of the Daleks much at all. But that's pretty much the only episode I really didn't like in Series 5, which is heaps better than any previous series when I would hate at least 3 or more episodes (usually a two-parter in there too). VotD would probably be a fairly average episode in the context of other series.
Yes, The Lodger is pretty much a filler episode, but it does it's job really well and makes the most use of a basically $0 visual effects budget. (And being Australian I had no preconceptions about James Cordon, who I hear has very limited acting skills, however his character didn't call for a great deal of acting prowess).
