That's only if we take SJA as canon. Is it? (Speaking of which, what about Torchwood, is that canon?)

I'm pretty sure all the filmed adventures are canon. What else would they be? Fanfic?  ;) ;D (Sorry, it's late and I'm in a silly mood.)

And why would only Ian and Barbara be affected? It didn't happen to any other as far as I know, not Sarah Jane and Jo Grant certainly.

I'm guessing it's not traveling in the TARDIS that prevents one from aging, but that there was a specific adventure on a specific planet that prevents humans from aging. I don't know which one RTD was thinking of, or if he just imagined one in his own head. But I took it that because the lack of aging only happened to them, it was from an adventure that specifically happened to them.

For what it's worth, Sarah Jane said it was a rumor that Ian and Barbara hadn't aged since the '60s.

Ahhhh. Good catch, RP! I forgot that part. I bet Moffat doesn't even have to address it, then.

Of course, the absence of Barbara will have to be explained, which will be very sad.

Looking for supporting logic in the canon statements that RTD threw about in his scripts can be an exercise in futillity! :)

From reading The Writer's Tale, I get a sense that RTD in most cases went with his gut, for what "felt right."  For the most part, I think it served him well, although it led to instances where perhaps the plot wasn't rigorously enough thought through, but his scripts almost always were full of points of emotional resonance.

He was definitely more interested in what he could put on screen than in maintaining some idea of canon or even consistency. But in that respect frankly he's following in the footsteps of most Who writters throughout the classic era who were oblivous to this even being an issue.

Hi, brand new here, hope it's okay to respond to older posts.

Favorite companion, hands down, is Sarah Jane Smith.  Other favorites, well, loved the UNIT crowd for the most part.  I go back and forth with Jo--I really can't stand the ditziness, but then she had her stronger moments, and she was always the one to be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, even more so than the Doctor (for example, the end of The Time Monster).  Brigadier, Yates, Benton, all great.  I'd have loved to see more of Liz Shaw, but I can see where having a companion who verged on being an intellectual match for the Doctor made exposition difficult.

Haven't really gotten into the new series, but I kind of like Mickey.  Don't know about the rest.

Hi Kimberly, welcome to the DWP!

You're obviously a big fan of the Pertwee era then?

Thanks for the welcome!  Yep, Pertwee's the Man.   Watched his entire run when I was in junior high in Texas.  I know there were complaints about having so many Earth-bound stories, but I liked that.  Plus, that era had the Brigadier, and how can anything *not* be awesome when it has the Brigadier?

Indeed! And it's nice to see another fan from Texas on the DWP forums. (Whether it was only during your junior high years or not, I'm still counting it.)  8)

You make a very good point about the Brig. Every era of Who has something that it can be critisized for and equally things everyone loves about it. In the case of Pertwee we had the whole UNIT family era, which most people loved!

It's been a few years, but Texas was where I got into fandom (lived in San Marcos, near Austin).  And to try to keep this marginally on topic, it was also where I went to my first convention and met Jon Pertwee and John Levene.

hi Kimberley Rose, what a stylish name!  You're quite right about the Brigadier and Sarah Jane "there's nothing 'only' about being a woman' Smith.
I know the theory about liz Shaw being a problem because as smart as the Dr, but I can't see it in the shows myself.  Also she had a great line in mini-skirts!  I always found Jo too dippy, even when I was 12 - I think that's part of why Sarah Jane was so good
