But there are only 3 stories...
« on: October 04, 2011, 09:26:59 PM »
As we all know, due to the sad loss of Lis Sladen passing away, there are only 3 stories/6 episodes for series 5 of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

I wonder whether they in any way looked into expanding the series with one or two stories in which Sarah Jane is deliberately absent from the story. I know it's called the Sarah Jane Adventures, but it would have been nice to have a fuller series in my opinion.

Would you have appreciated some non Sarah Jane episodes or are you just happy with what we have?

ISTR RTD said an absolute no to SJA without SJS and I have to say I agree. I doubt that her death wil be directly addressed in the show, as it would a tough sell to small kids. I doubt we'll see more than a 'in memory' card over the end credits.

However, after the Brig tribute in WoRS, I suspect they'll do the same for SJ in DW once these episodes have aired.

I think the chances of new SJAs being made now are non-existant.  It would just be too painful for all concerned.

In terms of an on-screen tribute, there was a title card dedication to Lis at the beginning of Impossible Astronaut, and I doubt they'll do a repeat of what they did with the Brigadier in The Wedding of River Song.  Tragic as any death is, Nick had lived a relatively long life and it felt appropriate to bookend it with the Brigadier's passing in the series itself.   Lis's passing however was upsetting in a different way - it felt like her death interupted a work-in-progress.  For that reason, I doubt if they will mirror Lis's passing with Sarah Jane's as part of a future story, and frankly, I hope they don't.  I like to think of Sarah running around with the Bannerman Road gang fighting aliens without having her story brought to an end off-screen.

ISTR?
In truth, it doesn't make much sense to have a story without her presence. I guess I was thinking of something more along the lines of a 'Doctor-lite' episode in essence, though that would be equally hard to achieve and wouldn't be worth it perhaps.

You know, I hadn't even considered this. It would be a bit silly and painfull, I guess, to try and continue a series with the loss of the main character.

Yes. If Sarah Jane is acknowledge as dead, then this would damage a potential book series. There is certainly more adventures to be had with Sarah and the gang running around  Bannerman Road :)

I had the series 5 Blu-ray for quite some time before I got around to watching it and the whole thing was slightly bittersweet and felt unfinished which of course it was.

I'm hoping they will adapt the unfinished / unfilmed episodes into either comic or book form one day.
