Completing a Target collection
« on: February 13, 2011, 04:05:15 AM »
After many years of dormancy, I'm considering making the effort to actually complete my Target collection. I've got over 100 already (heavily weighted towards the first four Doctors), mostly picked up 20-30 years ago when they routinely turned up for 10p in charity shops (those were the days, I could scan a bookcase for that target logo in seconds).

Does anyone have any tips for getting Targets without too much time and expense? I see that most of them turn up on eBay fairly regularly, is that the best way to go? Sadly most of the 'job lot' sales that look to be particularly good value are no good for me, as I'll already have the bulk of what they are selling. I have all the Pertwee stories and all but four of the T.Baker ones, which collectively tend to make up most of the collections being sold.

Any advice appreciated.

I think it's worth comparing prices for each title through eBay and Amazon. I can often find very good deals on Target novels in either place.

What would be really handy is a job lot of just sixth and seventh doctor books, as I've only one between them! (Attack of the Cybermen). I used to have Remembrance but it was loaned to someone and never came back.

I had started collecting in 1983 or so and had just over a hundred of the Target books. When I lost my collection in hurricane Katrina, I found eBay to be the best resource and actually bought 3 partial sets to get most of the collection. I used Amazon to fill in the gaps. There were several duplicates which I sold to a used book store.

TPO, never been to one myself but I have heard people mention how they've picked up Target books at Conventions and the like.  There are stalls there selling them.  If i can find out more specifics I'll post again.

A friend on Twitter recommends the London Film and ComicCon conventions.  Also The Who Shop http://www.thewhoshop.com/benter-shop-c-284.html?osCsid=2bkbl2juqnrb42bvi924pa09n0 but says that can be a little pricy.

Ouch, yes they are a bit! Thanks for the pointers though.

have you tried Abe Books?

http://www.abebooks.com/

They're quite US-centric, but a search on "doctor who" with the publisher "target" has pulled up several thousand results.

A friend's blog post telling how they are re-releasing some Target novels with intro's by people associated with the show.

Cool, thanks for that! Unlikely to be much help short term, I already own all of those and most of the books I need can be had for £2 each on ebay. But if they get round to doing some of the less available books, e.g. Evil of the Daleks which goes for £20+, that will be very useful!

I recently purchased some of these Target reprints and I can't wait to start reading them! The only Target book I had prior to these reprints was 'The Green Death' which I got with an issue of Doctor Who Magazine. I think I'm going to try and get as many of the Target novels as I can where the TV story is incomplete or no longer exists.
