As everyone comes down off their post-Gallifrey 23 buzz, the team at The Doctor Who Podcast embarks on a mini project – over the next two episodes we will be looking at the era of John Nathan-Turner, the longest serving producer of Doctor Who, and a figure that has been the subject of equal parts derision and praise ever since he took on the role in the early 1980s.

In this episode Leeson and Tom look at how John Nathan-Turner came to take on the role of Producer, and his time on the show up to the end of the Peter Davison era.

Ian and Michele also review the first half of the JNT Memoirs, a release from Big Finish (sadly no longer available) where John Nathan-Turner shares his candid memories of his time on the show.

This episode brings us to the conclusion of our week long preview and review of the behemoth that is the Gallifrey convention.

We have waited a very long time for Mr Baker to appear in a Big Finish audio.  Just how did he fare?

The lost stories Foe from the Future and Valley of Death are reviewed, along with the first story from the regular season of new fourth Doctor adventures, Destination Nerva.

James and Ian were lucky enough to spend the day at the Big Blue Box Convention, and were lucky enough to secure some excellent coverage of the event.

One of the events at the convention was a screening of Cleaning Up, written by Simon Guerrier, who is heavily involved with the Big Finish range, and directed by Thomas Guerrier.

James caught up with Simon and chatted with him about this new short film.

Also in this episode are interviews with Tom Spilsbury, current editor of Doctor Who Magazine and Stephen Elsden, organiser of the Big Blue Box Convention.

At the end of a hectic day, James and Ian had the opportunity to chat to none other than Louise Jameson, best known as playing Leela from 70s Doctor Who alongside Tom Baker.  She stars in Cleaning Up, and chatted to James about the film and her time on Doctor Who.

Two episodes from classic Doctor Who have been discovered and returned by the BBC Archives.

Galaxy Four, episode 3, part of William Hartnell’s third season, has been returned along with the second episode of a Patrick Troughton story, The Underwater Menace.

Trevor and James talk about these discoveries and the background to how they were returned.

The Cybermen, classic monsters who terrorised the Doctor during the run of the original series, returned for the new series rejuvenated, revitalised and reinvented for a modern audience.

The DWP Campervan plays host to the metal meanies this episode with Trevor, Tom and James discussing the rebirth of the Cybermen in the new series of Doctor Who.

Ian and Michelle also review a Cybermen story from the Big Finish range.

In April this year a great loss occurred in the Doctor Who community with the death of Elisabeth Sladen, perhaps better known as Sarah Jane Smith, companion to the Third and Fourth Doctors.

It was a loss so sudden, so unexpected, and revealed what a private person Elisabeth was. It is only now courtesy of her autobiography we are finding out more about this extraordinary woman.

Certainly not The Doctor Who Podcast!

In this episode we have a chat about the rumours surrounding the Doctor Who movie. The Doctor Who convention in March 2012 comes under our piercing DWP gaze.

We draw the Simon Guerrier competition which we started in episode #108.

The Ark has recently been released on DVD, and Trevor and James take a look at what it has to offer.

This week was to have been our episode on the delightful Elisabeth Sladen, but unfortunately real life got in the way and James could not join us. We really wanted to do Lis justice and have all three of us in the campervan so we will postpone that episode for a very short while.

So, in the meantime, with a lack of anything to say about one of Doctor Who’s favourite companions, Trev and Tom settle back and have a geek out.

A what a wide ranging discussion it is – Voyage of the Damned, stunt casting, numeracy, Australian accents, accountancy and a whole lot of laughter.

Also the announcement of our competition just in time for Christmas.

During the London Riots earlier in the year, our very own James tried to find a quiet table and sit down with Simon Guerrier, a name that you might not all be familiar with but one that has been cropping up in the world of Doctor Who for many years now.

Simon has written for Big Finish for the Fifth and Seventh Doctors. Contributed stories to the Short Trips range. He has written original novels for the First and Tenth Doctors. Written comic strips. Made Bernice Summerfield come to life in the printed word. And produced some of the most fondly remembered documentaries which have featured on the 2Entertain range of classic series DVD releases.

In fact pretty much the only thing he HASN’T done is written for the new series.

Though that can’t be far away.

James had a fascinating chat with Simon, a man who has had such a submliminal effect on our enjoyment of Doctor Who. You might not know who he is, but after this interview, you will.

Time to delve into the wonderful universe of Big Finish at the Doctor Who Podcast.

It has been a while since we have done one of these things, but The Doctor Who Podcast quiz is back!

Tom is quizmaster to a nervous Trevor and James, who are being assaulted under the barrage of ten exquisitely chosen questions courtesy, in part, from our wonderful listeners.

The DWP like nothing better than a good ‘ole geek out – a chance to let our hair down, sit back with a warm, or indeed cold beverage, and talk about whatever pops into our heads.

Well, The Aztecs stand even today as one of the most shining examples of Doctor Who. It is a story that fulfils Doctor Who’s original mandate to educate, whilst at the same time it entertains.

This story has always been a firm favourite of the DWP, and we devote our episode to talking about it. We also have an interview with one of the cast from, Ian Cullen, who played Ixta.

In this episode we look at a side of Doctor Who that isn’t discussed very much – the partners of devoted Doctor Who fans.

Whilst we are all away at conventions, producing podcasts, watching DVDs, knitting scarfs and submitting scripts, just what do our partners do and what do they think of our obsession?

We bring in opinions from all over the globe, courtesy of podcasting friends.

We thought it was about time to talk about Big Finish themselves. How have they fared since there beginnings during the Doctor Who “wilderness” years in 1999, through to their triumphant releases today.

What do Big Finish do well, what can they do better, and what do we want more of. A lively discussion indeed on a company that has truly carried the flag for Doctor Who for nearly 12 years.

To cap the show off, Tom was lucky enough to interview David Richardson, line producer on the Big Finish range. Tom talked to him about his work for Big Finish.

It was early on Sunday morning, and a hushed silence fell over the convention area as the arena was set for the epic battle of wills between the two mighty podcasts.

Trevor and James made it back safe and sound to Australia and the UofK after their mammoth Gallifrey 22 convention experience, which took place in LA in late February.

They shared with an eager and incredibly jealous Tom their experiences over that weekend.

When we are not recording the latest amazing episode of The Doctor Who Podcast, the titanic trio are on the DWP forums marvelling at a thread that has grown, Krynoid like, since Matt Smith took over the reigns as the Doctor.

The thread in question is the Who is River Song thread. In this magic part of the forum, our members have been wondering, discussing and disecting various theories, information and flights of fancy over who the character of River Song really is.

We thought it was time the podcast weighed in our ideas as well as discussing the ideas already present.

To round off the episode, James and Trevor review the DVD release for a classic Tom Baker story, The Seeds of Doom.

It is our great pleasure to bring you at The Doctor Who Podcast an interview with Wilfred Mott himself, Bernard Cribbins. James was lucky enough to speak to him recently.

Bernard’s time with Doctor Who stretches back as far as the second Dalek movie – Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150AD, all the way up to his most memorable Who role as Wilfred Mott, grandfather and sometime comapnion to the David Tennant Doctor.

In the rest of the podcast, Tom and James geek out about companion mix ups. What if Adric was a companion to the 9th Doctor? How would Nyssa fare alongside the Matt Smith Doctor?

Anyway, I came across my review the other day, and thought you might like to read it – and four years later, I stand by it!  So here it is – feel free to let me know what you think.

It is always with some trepidation that I sit down to watch a Russell T Davies scripted episode – unfortunately he is just as capable of writing a breathtakingly excellent script as he is of complete drivel.  Where does the Runaway Bridge fit into that continuum?  Well, in my opinion, somewhere in the middle.  Not quite as dreadful as New Earth but a world away from Doomsday.

Donna’s character was more or less Rose and Jackie all rolled into one.  Loud and gobby balanced out by a good heart.  There were times when I really thought she was going to say ‘am I bovvered’, and it wouldn’t have seemed out of place in the slightest!  It was a shame to waste such a talented actress by giving Tate the personality of a character you would expect to turn up in her sketch show.

My biggest problem with this episode is that underneath it all, it was just re-run of Rose.  A melancholic doctor (disturbed this time by Roses’ departure rather than the time-war) meets a blonde airhead with a black boyfriend – detects an alien menace that is lurking under the Thames Barrier (rather than the London Eye), destroys the monster by flushing her down the plug hole and then sets himself up for an emotional goodbye.  Meanwhile, more deadly Christmas trees and more robot Santa’s.

Coupled with the fact that that London has been subject to yet another alien invasion at Christmas time, the episode begins to feel a bit like a formulaic pantomime rather than an innovative and interesting story.  RTD almost apologises to the audience for regurgitating the same scripts through the conversation the Doctor has with Donna –

“Big Spaceship over London last year?”,

“Hangover.”

“Daleks and Cybermen at Canary Wharf?”

“(bovvered?!) I was in Spain”.

Donna is the voice of the audience as RTD would like it to be – ‘yes we’ve seen it before, but we don’t mind’.  Well, personally I do mind a bit, and perhaps it might be a good idea to give the writing of next years Christmas script to a different writer to add a little originality.

More worryingly, this episode did not look anything like Christmas – it was filmed in the height of summer and wasn’t it obvious?! The scene on top of the building where the Doctor gives his jacket to Donna looked like one of the hottest summers ever! Neither Donna or the Doctor so much as shivered!

However, the mention of Gallifrey was most welcome and hopefully introduces the name for more common use in series three.  With all the rumour flying around about the Face of Boe’s secret concerning Time Lords, series three is shaping up nicely.

David Tennant was excellent in this episode, and he really has developed the Doctor’s character his own way – the contrast to the way Eccleston played the role is huge.  I am really beginning to look forward to see him operate in a relationship that will have a different dynamic to his ‘friendship’ with Rose.

The script was again – as per usual for any RTD script – punctuated by pop culture and innuendo (“they’re bigger on the inside” when staring at Donna’s chest!) the religious denouncement – (the Empress of Racnoss spaceship uncannily resembling the Star of David)  and asking the audience to get emotionally involved with characters that are little more than caricatures.

That said, the Tardis chase sequence was hugely enjoyable – even more so when you hear on the podcast that they didn’t even close the road! The Empress looked great despite her lack of movement, and the dark side of the Doctors character was portrayed incredibly effectively.  The mentioning of Rose was not overdone and the flashback scenes added an emotional level to the episode which RTD usually tries to achieve unsubtly through dialogue.

An entertaining episode, but one that I think kids will enjoy more than the fanbase – and hey, it’s Christmas so perhaps it was pitched really well.

A rating of 3 out of 5 for me.

James is in the campervan with Chip from the 2 Minute Timelord podcast this week to discuss what has happened on the Doctor Who news front.

We are all familiar with them, aren’t we?  The first Doctor and his crotchety, yet warm and inviting warmth he displayed to his companions.  The third Doctor and his dislike of authority figures. The fifth Doctor and his irritability, masking his keen intelligence.  The sometimes violent sixth Doctor.  And the mysterious, old beyond his years seventh.

I then spent a long time thinking about the eighth Doctor, and just what made his Doctor.  What defines him.  And you know what?  I had a really hard time defining him with any characteristics that were absolute.

The difficulty arises due to a number of reasons.  Firstly, we only have a 90 minute window of televised Doctor Who in which to assess him.  And for most of that he is suffering from post-regeneration ailments.  It is only once he discovers his shoes fit that the Doctor’s marbles start falling back into place.  So there is very little in the 1996 Telemovie you can point to and say it defines the Doctor.

Secondly, the book range.  Once the telemovie failed to materialise into an ongoing series he became the fodder for the BBC book range.  Now whilst there are some great stories in this series (Vampire Science and Alien Bodies spring to mind) I don’t think there is much there to work with.

Thirdly, there is the Big Finish range.  Again, like the books, there are some superb examples of Eighth Doctor stories, I am not sure there is much development or characterisation going on.

So, sitting on the train there that afternoon, I didn’t come up with many conclusions.

Now each Doctor, whatever the era, displays some common traits.  Curiosity, intelligence, a love for earthlings etc.  They are a given.  What I was trying to work out was the unique traits that define him.

But trying to build on that for the eighth Doctor I found extremely difficult.  I keep coming back to the telemovie, which I suppose in all of the eighth Doctor’s output, I am most familiar with.

So this is what I have so far.

Passion.  One might almost say lyrical passion.  A love for Puccini (though that might just be an affect of hearing it during his “death”).  The indescribable joy at the acquisition of Brian’s shoes.  The kiss.  And the other kiss.

The jokester.  The eighth Doctor doesn’t mind a bit of leg pulling.  His jape with Professor Wagg about being “half human on his mother’s side”.  His dreadful amnesia gag.  He also has a constant twinkle in his eye, like he is about to share with you the most rib tickling joke.

His sense of wonder.  After the seriousness of the seventh Doctor, McGann comes across as being quite childlike.

For the moment that is all I can come up with.  My problem with the above characteristics, whilst looking quite impressive at first glance, aren’t ones I can permanently assign to the eighth Doctor because they might be the effect of post-regeneration issues, or they are traits that were never really carried on into the books or audios.

The biggest thing for me though is the strong inference at the end of the telemovie that everything returns to the way it was. The Doctor settling down with the book he was reading at the beginning, sniffing jellybabies and listening to Madame Butterfly.  What do we make of that?  Has the Doctor truly developed his own personality or is he just the seventh Doctor Mark 2?

A very big episode for you this week, focused entirely on New Who. First up is a review of the audio book The Runaway Train, read by Matt Smith and given away free with the Daily Telegraph a few months back. James got a day pass and went to see Doctor Who Live, and he shares his experience with us. To round off the episode, we have a fantastic interview with Ian McNeice, the man who brought Winston Churchill so vividly to life in the Matt Smith story Victory of the Daleks.

Last time, on the DWP….

Trevor and Tom began their look at the second Doctor, and got as far as the end of his first season. In this episode we move onto his second, and arguably most popular season to see what lies within.

We also hear from James, and Luke from the Minute Doctor Who Podcast with a review of the DVD release of the Troughton story, The Dominators.

I am in a similar position to James in terms of time available to me to do justice to our shows.  My three kids keep me quite busy, and the wife also occasionally for some bizarre reason wants to see me.  She is strange like that.

So by weeks end, I suddenly see that the time left to me has diminished to nothing.

So what usually happens, and is certainly the case with the current recordings for the Troughton retrospective, Sunday is partially devoted to a research day.  That is, when I can fit it around holidays, kids football (real pointy-ball stuff, not that other silly choreographed dance with a round ball) and other things going on that invariably fill up a weekend.

I worship at the altar of the multi-tabbed browser.  I spend time finding interesting titbits from a variety of sources, and lay them out in tab, after tab, after tab in my browser.  I can then dive into a particular tab if I see the recording is going down one particular path.  Sometimes I feel guilty about relying on that, but then I think it is no different to having a pile of books beside me, with little bookmarks strategically placed at important information.

You have probably heard me talk about them before on the show, but if you haven’t already got them, get the About Time books from Mad Norwegian Press.  They, in my opinion, are the single most important reference tool for the classic series that you can have at your disposal.

But anyway…

At the moment I am in the process of reading two very good novels starring the second Doctor.  I am hoping to have them finished by mid next week so I can record a segment for the last of the Troughton retrospective episodes.  Now I am not the fastest reader in the world and my retention is probably marginally worse.  Also sometimes I make poor choices and end up slogging through stuff I wouldn’t ordinary go anywhere near.  I don’t think I could never be a professional tv or film reviewer – my brain would probably reach down and throttle me if I had to go through half the stuff that ends up on our screens.

So I hope doing this sort of thing never becomes a slog, something I dread.  Not because I don’t enjoy it, I do.  But more that I feel if I don’t put in enough time and effort to make what comes out of my mouth sound interesting, accurate and informed, I have failed.  The podcast is very important to me, in so many ways.

I am so lucky I have two such talented, eloquent and knowledgeable presenters on the DWP with me.  They make me look good.

On discovering that I co-present a podcast, the friends and family who show any interest inevitably ask at some point, ‘well, just how long do you spend on this’?! My answer is usually quite brief and goes something like, ‘well Trev and Tom do all the editing, so not much’! And for the most part, that is absolutely true.

However, for DWP #39, Tom and I sent Trev on holiday and we got stuck into reviewing two of the most derided classic who stories of all time – Revenge of the Cyberman and Silver Nemesis. What we thought of the DVD set you can hear on the podcast, but what I wanted to talk about here was the preparation required for this, 45 minute podcast.

I currently have a very busy life.  I’m not complaining – busy is better than boring, and in general, it’s all good.  I have a daughter who is rapidly approaching her second birthday and I have a very demanding new job so between the two, my free time is limited.  Therefore, watching seven episodes of Doctor Who along with several special features in just seven days is something I haven’t even thought about for years now!  My wife, bless her, was incredibly understanding and de-camped upstairs to watch EastEnders on her own every night that week.

Now, getting to my style of review – I make notes.  I have to.  I have a brain that gets distracted incredibly easily and whilst talking to Tom, it’s quite possible that I will end up making just two or three of the forty odd points that I have somehow deemed ‘interesting’ and wish to make during our review.

Recording time comes around and Tom and I talk for about 90 minutes.  You get to hear about half of that in the final edit.  Both Tom and I make, despite our best efforts, about half of the points we have on our respective lists.

So dear listener/reader, I thought it might be worth publishing my raw notes for Revenge to give you just a brief, very narrow insight into what goes into just one episode of the DWP.   Why do we do it?! Beacuse we love it of course! And for some reason the three of us are under the impression that you out there will find what we have to say interesting!  Anyway, here you are – feel free to make comments and if there is there the desire, you can have my Silver Nemesis notes next time!

Notes for Revenge of the Cybermen review

If there was a Doctor that many commentators said inspired Matt Smith in the creation of his Doctor’s persona, it was one Patrick Troughton, the second Doctor.

Trevor and Tom explore the era of this most brilliant of Doctors in the first part of our retrospective of his work before, during and after his time on Doctor Who.

In this first part, we look at his time before Doctor Who, and cover his first season in 1966.

Stay tuned, for later in the week we release the second part of our series on Patrick Troughton, the cosmic hobo.

Tom and James went on a works outing last week up to the wilds of Derbyshire to see what was going on at Whooverville 2, the convention that boasts being the only such event run in an engine shed. And they are right (we checked).

Tom was lucky enough to be the on-stage interviewer for second Doctor companion and all round screamer Deborah Watling. Deborah played Victoria Waterfield alongside the 2nd Doctor from 1967-1969. With the kind permission of the Whooverville bods we bring that interview to you in this episode.

The boys also managed to back Sophie Aldred (or Ace to her legions of fans) into a corner and ask her some questions. And to round off the day, Tom intimidated a Dalek.

We also have a fantastic interview that James conducted with Barnaby Edwards. Whilst he talks about his involvement with this trilogy, he also shares some hightlights of his extensive CV. We would put a copy of his CV up for you to look at, but it would overload the internet.

Sometimes we just don’t have enough time in the podcast itself to cover all we want to say, so this blog is an opportunity to expand upon what is presented in the show, in written format.

It is also an area where we can start our own streams of thought going, and see where it leads us.  So whilst it won’t be a regular column, there will be plenty to come back and read when the urge takes you.

Tom and Trevor are in the caravan this week and thought it was time for the DWP to start one of their quite famous geek outs.

We did then quite a lot back when we were with the DWO WhoCast, so it only seems fitting to start them on the DWP.

Running Through Corridors is a three volume series by Rob Shearman and Toby Hadoke. Rob and Toby spent 2009 watching Doctor Who, two episodes a day, every day. Every episode from Ian Chesterton’s wonderment at the TARDIS in 1963 all the way through to David Tennant’s swan song on New Years Day 2010. Running Through Corridors is a journal of that experience.

Volume 1 of this series is being released in December 2010. The DWP will be featuring interviews with Rob and Toby as well as reviews of the book over the coming months. We will also have copies to give away of this exciting new book.

A couple of weeks ago Tom got a day pass from the DWP campervan and went on a bit of a field trip. He visited beautiful downtown Manchester to take part in the Fab Cafe event being held there.

First up is Rob Shearman, most notably the writer of the episode that brought the Eccleston Doctor face to face with the Daleks. He has also written for Big Finish and recorded audio commentaries for the official DVD box set releases.

Tom also spoke to Charlie Ross, who has provided many extraordinary character voices for the Big Finish range.

This is an episode not to miss, as it turned out to be a very lively and entertaining conversation about this most interesting of episodes.

Big Finish recently released a fantastic trilogy of audio dramas, loosely called the Klein Trilogy. They all share a common character, Klein, a Nazi officer, who was first introduced in the Seventh Doctor audio, Colditz, released in 2001.

The character is back for this trilogy, and the Doctor Who Podcast has a look at these releases – A Thousand Tiny Wings, Survival of the Fittest and The Architects of History.

James provides some background to the Klein character and reviews Klein’s first story, Colditz, whilst Tom and Trevor talk about the recent trilogy. Trevor also had the chance to chat with John Ainsworth and Alex Mallison, two of the creatives involved with this trilogy.
